on

Winter in New York is a wonderful time to explore the city. It might be very cold outside, so you may want to dress accordingly. There are so many fun things to do in NYC in the winter that you shouldn’t miss. New York is lucky enough to experience a lot of snow during the winter season which makes our fun winter activities in New York even more exciting.

After a couple of years of living in the city, there are a few things that I love doing during the winter season. Today I’ll share my personal favorite winter activities with you.

When it comes to fun things to do in New York in the winter there’s a lot that I personally enjoy the most during that special time of the year. My weekends are for ice skating and holiday markets and even during the week, there’s more fun stuff to do in NYC in winter like visiting a museum or catching up with some of my friends inside an igloo (!) at one of my favorite rooftop bars.

My weekends are for ice skating and holiday markets…

Top 9 Fun Things To Do In New York City In The Winter

  1. New York gets really cold during the holiday season and the famous ice rinks in New York are one of the fun things to do in New York City during winter. You have multiple ice skating options in New York which are definitely fun especially in the midst of the beautiful skyscrapers. The rinks in New York are also reasonably priced.

If you have little to no experience on the ice, do not worry. Our favorite ice rinks in NYC are the Wollman Rink in Central Park, Rockefeller Ice Rink and the ice rink at Bryant Park.

Here you can find our list of ice rinks in NYC.

  2. Best Christmas Markets NYC

The famous Union Square Holiday Market is one of the biggest holiday markets in the city. From mid-November until Christmas the market on Union Square attracts lots of visitors from all over the world.

As fun winter activities in New York, an afternoon at one of the amazing holiday markets is an unforgettable experience when you’re visiting NYC. Also, don’t miss out the Winter Village in Bryant Park where you can find everything from cute shops with locally handcrafted gifts to delicious food from the city’s best restaurants.

To give you an overview of NYC’s Holiday markets, we made a list for you.

  3. rockefeller_center_christmas_tree_191208095722003

The Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center is probably the most famous tree in the world. The tree lights up on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving with a huge party and ceremony.

As one of the most fun stuff to do in NYC in winter make sure to come early to grab a good spot with a view, enjoy the live music and of course the unforgettable moment when New York City officially starts their holiday season. The famous Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center stays until January which gives you enough time to enjoy it to the fullest.

  4. One of the Best Dyker Heights Christmas Lights Tours : The 4-Hour Dyker Heights Holiday Lights Bus Tour

Each neighborhood decorates its block differently and it so much fun to explore all the different Christmas decoration in the wintertime in NYC. One of our highlights of fun things to do in New York in the winter is a tour trough Dyker Heights. One of the most visited neighborhoods during this time.

The Dyker Heights Christmas lights are located in Brooklyn. Here, countless homes are beautifully decorated with lights and props. The whole neighborhood is pretty much lit up which becomes a sight to see. There is no limit to creativity. Often there are even small competitions in the neighborhood such as whose house is the best decorated.

  5. 191117210844003_Igloo_Bar_at_230_Fifth_Rooftop

To me having a drink at one of the rooftop bars in NYC is high on my list of fun activities in nyc in the winter. It’s amazing how rooftop bars are still a great place to go even though it’s cold out. At 230 5th Ave, they have rooftop igloos where you can stay warm while enjoying the breathtaking city views.

Starting every year in November New York City’s largest indoor and outdoor rooftop bar offers the igloos until May of each year. Don’t miss out on this fun stuff to do in NYC in winter.

  6. fun_things_to_do_in_nyc_in_the_winter_181206121306001_1_1920x960

It’s the most popular toy shop in New York and it simply belongs to the city just like the yellow taxis and the Empire State Building. Since November 2018 FAO Schwarz shines brightly from its new location at Rockefeller Center and is a great thing to do in the winter in NYC for a good reason.

FAO Schwarz has been making children’s hearts beat fast for over 150 years. They have a large selection of teddy bears, barbies, books, and international toys.

If you want to see the FAO Schwarz NYC’s toy shop in Manhattan and do not want to be pushed through the store like sardines, come early in the morning. For children, this place is, of course, unique and should definitely be on the list.

  7. 180808123042004_national_museum_history_nyc

With many of the most famous museums in the world, New York City offers a huge variety for everyone. From the Museum of Natural History to art museums like the MoMa or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, these iconic places are something you should have on your list of fun stuff to do in New York in the winter.

Especially when it’s really cold outside, the museum can be a great place to warm up again, get a break from the freezing temperatures and enjoy the exhibits at the same time. Most museums are included in one of the sightseeing passes.

  8. radio_city_christmas_spectacular_161104104936001

Every year from November through January, over 140 sensational dancers and singers perform in pure Christmas spirit at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The entire show lasts for 90 minutes and is one of the most fun things to do in New York City during the winter. Why?

You will see sparkling costumes, a unique stage set and loads of Christmas songs that inspire audiences. The stars of the show are Santa Claus and his elves, the Rockettes. The female dancers are one of the best dance groups in the world. My favorite part of the show is the Toy Soldier Performance. Every move they make is seemingly perfect. At one point you will see them lined up so flawlessly, you can only see one soldier.

  9. Macy

    Macy’s Christmas Decorations

Last but not least on our list of fun winter activities in New York is the beautiful holiday windows which are being decorated right after Thanksgiving.

Each year, New York City department stores design their entire window displays and usually has a theme. You can tell department stores put time and effort into these decorations and it’s such a great time to stroll around and admire them all. There is a lot of detail that goes into the Holiday Windows in New York. Of course, this is not just something special for the New York tourists.

As far as routes go, we recommend walking from Central Park on Fifth Avenue towards Herald Square to see the most beautiful holiday windows. The city is adorned with wreaths and bright lights everywhere. You’ll be able to pass by the Rockefeller Center’s Christmas Tree along the way. Once you arrive at Herald Square, don’t miss out on Macy’s holiday department on the very upper level. It’s an entire floor full of Christmas decoration.

By the way: If you’re still not sure about celebrating Independence Day in Chicago, check out my guide to the 4th of July in NYC or the 4th of July in Miami!

What to expect on 4th of July in Chicago

As Chicago locals will attest, the 4th of July in Chicago is one of the best times of the year to be in the Windy City. Instead of the chilly temperatures and infamous breezes of the winter, you’ll enjoy Chicago at its finest.

With high temperatures in the low 80s and low temperatures in the low 60s, navigating the city is comfortable and easy.

Plus, the parks are all open, and with an average of about 15 hours of daylight per day, you can count on the sun shining brightly throughout your trip. For international travelers interested in stopping by their first Chicago 4th of July, it’s worth noting that Independence Day in Chicago is a national federal holiday. This means that banks will be closed (though the ATMs will still function normally), as will post offices and other government buildings. Most other shops or restaurants will be open, often offering a summertime sale or discount. Given the celebratory nature of a Chicago 4th of July, you’ll want to double-check the hours of smaller shops and restaurants as they’ll likely give their employees an early out on Monday.

Getting ready to celebrate the 4th of July in Miami? Ready to see the sky light up from Miami Beach? Then you’re in luck! Miami is a great vacation destination all year round, of course, but 4th of July 2023 in Miami is going to be even more special.

With Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4th, 2023, travelers to Miami will have a great start into the new week. And given that Miami is already known for being an explosion of colorful art deco buildings and vibrant personalities, the 4th of July Miami fireworks are icing on the cake.

To help you get the most of your Miami 4th of July 2022 weekend, we’ve gathered a list of activities you and the family can enjoy, along with some of the best spots to see those Miami fireworks.

By the way: If you’re still not sure about celebrating Independence Day in Miami, check out my guide to the 4th of July in NYC or the 4th of July in Chicago!

What to expect on 4th of July in Miami

Thanks to almost 12 hours of sun a day and temperatures ranging between 82 and 86 F (28 and 30 C) during the day, the weather in Miami will give you that warm, tropical feeling. With that in mind, summer in Miami can be wet. With an average of over 40mm of rain starting in June and going through September, a vacation in July means you should expect some showers.

The average number of rainy days in Miami in July is 22. While each rain might not be too heavy, you’ll want to make sure you can pack something light in case you get caught in a drizzle while you’re out exploring. After all, the combination of warm days and rainfall do lead to humidity, so you really only need something waterproof that you can pack in your backpack or bag.

In addition to the weather, you’ll be traveling for the 4th of July weekend. For our international visitors, Independence Day is a national holiday in the US. For this kind of federal holiday, government buildings (like the post office) and banks are closed. Not to worry – the majority of shops and restaurants stay open throughout the long weekend, offering seasonal sales and promotions. You can find out more about their hours through their Instagram or Facebook pages.

On 4th of July itself, shops may be closed. This will depend on the type of shop and the area, so it’s best to confirm ahead of time. Also, it’s not unusual for restaurants to close early, so make sure to call ahead or have reservations for those must-visit stops instead of waiting till the last minute.

Where To Watch 4th Of July Fireworks In Miami

In addition to some of the local parties, there are plenty of show-stopping fireworks events happening this 4th of July in Miami. After all, you can’t stop by South Florida over Independence Day weekend without celebrating with one of America’s most time-honored traditions: fireworks!

Planning A Trip To Miami For 4th Of July

Spending 4th of July in Miami offers a chance to enjoy an already great city in an exciting way. Already a city known for its energy and its cultural heritage, Independence Day in Miami is a great way to see the culture and the people come together to celebrate America’s birthday.

In particular, 4th of July Miami 2023 will be an even bigger celebration. The Independence Days in 2020 and 2021 saw event postponements and cancellations due to the pandemic and to the Surfside condominium collapse in 2021. While it was beautiful to see Miami come together as a city to support its people and its community in those hard moments, it did come at the cost of some of the more public events, like its Independence Day festivities.

2023 is the ideal time to visit Miami again as the communities come together to celebrate once again. Be a part of Miami returning to its glory as one of the top destinations to celebrate Independence Day in the United States!

East River State Park Brooklyn Waterfront Fireworks Viewing

    Park
    in
    Lower East Side

Given its spacious lawn positioned with a view of the river, the East River State Park is one of our favorite spots to sit back and enjoy the NYC fireworks.

A great spot for families, you’ll want to bring a picnic and a blanket so you can make the most of the warm New York summer evening.

  8. 08

South Street Seaport, Manhattan Waterfront Fireworks Viewing

    Building
    in
    Financial District

    South_Street_Seaport_180808090839004

Another spot with a view that’s tough to beat, the South Street Seaport in Manhattan is conveniently located where the firework barges are generally positioned.

Imagine the scene: not only are you in one of the best places to see the 4th of July fireworks in NYC with them taking off in front of you, but you also have a background complete with historic ships and the picturesque Brooklyn Bridge.

As is the case with the more popular spots, you’ll want to arrive early to the area. The elevated viewing spots can be accessed via Broad Street, Pearl Street, and Frankfort Street.

  9. 09

Brooklyn Bridge Park And Promenade Fireworks Viewing

    Park
    in
    Dumbo

    brooklyn_bridge_park_180711162132006

The next-best thing to being on the Brooklyn Bridge to watch the fireworks? Brooklyn Bridge Park and Promenade. With its placement right on the East River, this waterfront park shares incredible views of Manhattan.

For those of you looking for an iconic New York City skyline photo framed by fireworks, this could just be the best spot. In particular, the intersection of Water Street & Washington Street will give you the just-right angle of the Empire State Building and the Manhattan Bridge.

Unfortunately, the Brooklyn Bridge Park is no hidden secret, so it tends to get crowded. If you’re planning on staking out your spot, you’ll want to arrive early.

  10. 10

    DUMBO Brooklyn Fireworks Viewing

    Districts
    in
    Dumbo

    Dollarphotoclub_690309461_1600x960

For a more industrial setting for your 4th of July NYC fireworks viewing, try the hip DUMBO (which stands for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass). Despite having plenty of shops and restaurants, this spot tends to be less crowded for fireworks.

While that’s partially because the view can be a little blocked by buildings, it’s also lesser-known by tourists. So if you’re looking for a more low-key way to celebrate and you don’t mind not having the perfect Instagram photo, this could be a great option for you to catch the show.

  11. 11

FDR Park On Roosevelt Island Fireworks Viewing

    Other Attraction
    in
    Midtown Manhattan

    Roosevelt_Island_170208223314006v2

Similar to DUMBO, the FDR Park – a park on the southern part of Roosevelt Island – is a delightfully uncrowded option for taking in the fireworks on the 4th of July.

Thanks to a wide open green area, you can actually stretch out and stay a while. With a show like the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks, it’ll be worth the wait.

More information on the Roosevelt Island Fourth of July Family Fireworks Celebration is available at the official Roosevelt Island website.

Frequently Asked Questions About 4th of July in New York

Can I see the Manhattan fireworks from New Jersey?

Not really, no. Though there have been years in the past that the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks have been launched from the Hudson River (the river between New Jersey and Manhattan), they are now primarily launched from the East River.

It might be possible to catch a glimpse or reflection from New Jersey, but if your goal is to see the big show, you’ll want to head into the city.

Is it possible to see Macy’s 4th of July fireworks from Brooklyn?

Yes, absolutely. Because the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks are launched from barges in the East River (the river that separates Manhattan and Brooklyn), there are plenty of great parks and places in Brooklyn to view the 4th of July fireworks.

Can I watch the NYC 4th of July fireworks from the Brooklyn Bridge?

No. As ideal as it would be, it is not allowed. As in past years, city officials remind New York residents and visitors that the Brooklyn Bridge is not a place to view Macy’s fireworks show.

Are restaurants and shops open on the 4th of July NYC?

Tuesday, 4th of July 2023 in the United States is a national holiday. This means that federal buildings, like the post office, and banks will be closed. With private businesses, whether they are open or not is up to them.

Given that 4th of July 2023 falls on a Tuesday, there’s a good chance restaurants and shops will be open as usual throughout the weekend. On 4th of July, though, they may have modified hours. Be sure to check their social media for announcements or call in advance to confirm their business hours.

Do I need tickets for the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks?

Fortunately, the annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Show is free. Macy’s does offer a number of official elevated viewing areas for the event that require showing up early, but there’s no need to pay for entrance.

Which side of Manhattan does the Macy’s 4th of July show take place?

Continuing a recent trend, the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show will take place on the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

It does have a history on the Hudson River between New Jersey and Manhattan (it’s where the show debuted in 1958), but the East River has since become the home of the annual NYC 4th of July fireworks celebration.

When do the July 4th fireworks start?

The fireworks show typically starts around 9:20 pm while public viewing starts at 6 pm.

How long are the 4th of July fireworks in NYC?

The fireworks typically last for about 30 minutes and are over by 10 pm.

The best neighborhoods for families in NYC

You might wonder which neighborhood in New York City is the best to stay at with your family. We really like the following districts:

Times Square/ Theatre District

The area around Times Square is perfect for families, because the colorful lights of the numerous billboards will brighten up children’s eyes. You can reach a lot of attractions in walking distance from here and the connection to the Subway is also excellent. Times Square is considered the pulsating center of New York City and among the many musicals and theaters there’s surely something for every age group. In the large Disney Store your children will definitely find a great souvenir to remember this vacation.

Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village is known for its many brick houses and the smaller streets without skyscrapers. This makes it a bit quieter than other neighborhoods in New York City. For a little break in between, you can visit Washington Square Park, which also has a playground for children. Shopping lovers and gourmets will not be disappointed: Bleecker Street offers countless food spots and shopping opportunities!

Financial District

Families staying in the Financial District not only have the World Trade Center and 9/11 Memorial & Museum within walking distance, but the Brooklyn Bridge as well. Many ferries are nearby and the famous Statue of Liberty is also within close proximity. The Financial District is considered a very safe part of the city.

Murray Hill

Murray Hill is a small and relatively quiet district of NYC, but still located very centrally. Many attractions such as the Empire State Building are in close proximity, because Midtown Manhattan is only a few minutes away. There you can visit Bryant Park, where you will find a carousel for children. You also have a great view over the East River.

SoHo

SoHo is a very popular neighborhood in NYC. You can find many bars, restaurants and also shopping opportunities here. Among other things, SoHo is known for its great architecture. In addition, the district is not far from Hudson River and is also considered to be safe. A trip to the Museum of Ice Cream is great fun for the whole family.

Near Central Park

Staying close to Central Park has several benefits for families. On the Upper West Side, for example, you’ll find the American Museum of Natural History, where there’s so much to discover for all ages. In Central Park itself, there are countless activities for families with children. In addition to several playgrounds, you will also find a carousel and a zoo. In the winter you can go ice skating at Wollman Rink and on warmer days you can have a picnic with the family.

You’ll love the NYC skyline view from Hyatt House Jersey

Hotels & Accommodations

Jersey City

Our Highlight

Best_Hotels_Near_American_Dream_Mall_Hyatt_House_Jersey_City

4 stars | Hyatt House Jersey City is probably the most famous hotel in Jersey City. Why? It has more than one highlight to offer: from many rooms you have an incredible view of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline, there is a rooftop bar and the close proximity to the PATH makes it so popular.

The rooms are very spacious, stylishly decorated and some have their own small kitchen including a microwave. That makes it especially interesting for families with children. And the best part? Despite all these advantages, it has a very good value for money!

Even though it’s not quite as close to the American Dream Mall and MetLife Stadium compared to the other hotels, I didn’t want to keep it from you. Because both are still quickly reached and in addition you can enjoy a beautiful view of the skyline of New York City with the all towering One World Trade Center.

▷ Our 14 Favorite Hotels with Pools in NYC 2023

Published

on

Summer in NYC can get ridiculously hot and uncomfortable. So what’s one of the best remedies to combat the heat? Lying by the pool, relaxing and enjoying the view of the New York skyline. Last summer we stayed at the Dominick Hotel in SoHo for a few days. It was so hot that it was about at 85°F, in the shade.  Jumping into the pool was a real refreshment and the icing on the cake. It’s only right we curated a list of hotels with pools in NYC.

Surprisingly, there aren’t many hotels that have an outdoor pool. Those who made it on our list are spread all over New York. From Central Park to Brooklyn, there’s a suitable hotel in your area. In most cases, only the hotel guests have access to the pool area, but you can try your luck as well. Just call shortly beforehand and from time to time there are also pool tickets that are available for purchase.

Here are the best hotels with a pool in NYC

Its location in the Meatpacking District puts you right in the middle of everything: the High Line, great restaurants and bars are in the immediate vicinity (the Meatpacking District is one of my favorite parts of the city). It also has a large pool from where you can look out over the rooftops of the city. It feels so luxurious!

You’re spoiled for choice – either take the rooms facing Central Park or those with views that range the George Washington Bridge to the Statue of Liberty – but all have in common that the views through the floor-to-ceiling windows are spectacular.

    Margaritaville_Resort_Times_Square_Hotel_New_York_Pool

4 stars | The Margaritaville Resort Times Square is the only hotel in Times Square with a rooftop pool and brings Mexico to New York!
