According to Mohsen, “there have already been attempts to accomplish this,” but they tend to “focus on certain sorts of programs that were banned for specific reasons, for example, because they included malware.” We wanted to make a model that could predict how likely it was that an app would be removed across all app categories and reasons for removal. The past initiatives only cared about consumers, but Mohsen also wants to help engineers who unintentionally broke the rules.

The first step was to gather a huge amount of data on both deleted and still-installed apps: We gathered information about almost two million apps, such as the descriptions their creators submitted to the App Store. Then we went ahead and built the foundation for half of these apps.

Tested models on a large data set of apps

After that, Mohsen and his team monitored the App Store to see which applications were withdrawn over the course of six months. This was true of 56% of the people we chose. It took 26 months to put together the data set that was used to train the ML models.

Their choice of algorithm was known as Extreme Gradient Boosting. For challenges like this, “it is the best machine learning algorithm,” Mohsen says. Two different prediction models, one for programmers and one for end users, were built using the method.

The user model was made with 47 characteristics, and a test dataset showed that it was accurate 79.2% of the time in predicting app uninstallations. The developer model relied on just 37 features, resulting in a somewhat lower accuracy of 76.2 percent, because some of these variables, such as app store ratings, are unavailable before submitting the program to the store.

The future of an app may be predicted with “reasonable precision,” as Mohsen puts it. The next step is to give app developers and users a way to figure out if their apps are likely to be deleted. “This is useful for developers because they risk being removed from the Google Play Store for repeated rule violations,” says Mohsen, “but it’s also useful for consumers since they create data with their applications that they’ll lose if the app is abruptly pulled.”

New Report Seeks to Ensure Hydropower Sustainability

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy has given hydropower operators new information to better plan for extreme weather events and changes in seasonal energy demands brought on by climate change.

For the current analysis, ORNL researchers simulated future hydrologic conditions at 132 federal hydropower plants in the United States using downscaled global climate forecasts. The generated forecasts will allow hydropower operators and policymakers to adjust their operational schedules and water consumption each season as part of a comprehensive mitigation strategy in order to prepare for changing climatic conditions and decreased water availability.

Hydropower Sustainability and the Environment
