Drone superhighways and airports are coming. Let’s make sure they don’t make life miserable

The way forward for our cities is being redrawn. Credit score: Alex Yuzhakov/Shutterstock

Inside simply two years, the U.Ok. may very well be dwelling to the planet’s biggest drone superhighway because of the plans of a bunch of know-how firms. It appears like one thing out of a science fiction film, but it surely’s simply one in every of a lot of initiatives within the pipeline as a part of the U.Ok. authorities’s drone ambition statement introduced lately.

Nevertheless it’s essential to not get carried away. These plans might change British skies and folks’s lives. Now could be the time to consider whether or not the noise, security threat and disruption to household neighborhoods is price it.

Proper now, U.Ok. legal guidelines limit using pilotless drones. However the Skyway will enable automated drones, utilizing ground-based sensors put in alongside the freeway. These sensors present a real-time view of the place drones are within the airspace.

The 164-mile “Skyway” goals to attach the airspace above Studying, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Coventry and Rugby by mid-2024, and can obtain greater than £12 million government funding.

A few of the different aerospace initiatives embody air taxi companies which is able to transport folks and cargo. They want touchdown pads as large as a small airport.

Subsequent yr a pilot for the world’s first electric urban airport will begin building in Coventry in 2023. Hyundai plan to construct 200 such city airports within the subsequent 5 years.

A proliferation of supply drones can be prone to result in new logistic facilities, which may very well be designed as bee hive-like hubs, as seen in a patent filed by Amazon.

U.Ok. planning guidelines must change dramatically to accommodate these new buildings and the general public have to be consulted and the group profit made clear. But the U.Ok. authorities has introduced plans for the Skyway earlier than it has selected the infrastructure adjustments wanted to make approach for it.

It is not alone on this respect. A number of international locations together with Germany, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates are locked in an area race to ascertain drone and air taxis. Technological drone innovation is being permitted earlier than regulation is established and forward of a correct evaluation of the moral implications.

If persons are to have a correct say within the plans, they want the fitting details about the know-how concerned. A recent survey (March 2022) confirmed the U.Ok. public was about evenly cut up between those that stated they’d a great understanding (31%) of drones and what they’re used for, those that had some understanding (36%) and little understanding (33%). The identical examine discovered 54% of members could be uncomfortable in the event that they noticed drones frequently.

The switch of army know-how equivalent to drones into public life results in a marked distinction between the tempo of innovation and folks’s understanding of its influence. Many advantages consequence—for instance transporting medical supplies to remote areas—however ethical issues are additionally created and governments want to speak this.

The darker facet

One of the apparent issues is privateness as drones typically record and capture images. One other key difficulty arises from the very fact drones are prone to fly on the backside of airspace (as much as 400 toes within the air) and so will enhance noise and air air pollution.

Drone flight paths are prone to be constructed round present transport hubs, railway corridors and airports. The individuals who dwell in these areas will endure probably the most from air pollution and congested skies.

Plans to open a loud bar, takeaway restaurant, leisure advanced and even simply subsequent door’s new extension can have a devastating influence in your high quality of life. Think about if the skies above your property slowly began to fill with buzzing drones.

Aerospace is a safety-led tradition, however drone cargo delivery handover and touchdown carries a lot better threat of collision with low degree objects, buildings, buildings or folks. We do not know precisely how harmful this will likely be as a result of it hasn’t been completed on this scale earlier than.

Recent research exhibits folks produce other pink traces with regards to drone and air taxi growth. These embody defending wildlife and taking measures to stop pilotless drones from being hacked.

All these points present why asserting a roadmap for industrial drone rollout is less complicated than winning public support for it. It would not take a lot for folks to change into involved about drone use. For instance, almost two thirds of the U.Ok. public say the 2018 Gatwick airport incident, by which drone sightings compelled the airport to shut for 2 days, negatively influenced how they consider drones.

In consequence, there’s prone to be opposition to future drone supply, however how the mechanisms of presidency reply is but unclear. Nevertheless, there are some key rules that might assist.

The usage of knowledge from drones must be moral and clear. Business operators want to inform the general public about when their drones will report pictures and video in surveillance.

They should reassure us that AI know-how utilized in pilotless drones is reliable and whether or not facial recognition algorithms or different analytical instruments are been used, define how the general public’s knowledge will likely be protected and the way third events might use it.

Analysis has proven folks discover even small drone noise annoying. You may think about how a lot worse the issue will likely be with air taxis and new drone designs.

Surrounding structure and even native micro climates can amplify take off and touchdown noise from drones. The easy resolution to this will likely be for engineers to design quieter fashions.

The EU’s security and regulatory frameworks for drones and drone deliveries in city environments had been set out in 2020 and up to date in 2022. However nationwide governments might want to comply with by means of with the element and supply of drone regulation.

Maybe most significant, nevertheless, is that the general public is given an opportunity to become familiar with drone know-how and the way it will have an effect on them, earlier than it is too late to have a say.

Amazon to start delivering by drone in California town

Why Does Spectrum Router Keeps Dropping Wi-Fi

Why Does Spectrum Router Keeps Dropping Wi-Fi

You may be wondering why your spectrum router keeps dropping Wi-Fi. Let’s explore what you should do when faced with such a problem.

After reading this article, you will benefit from an expert step-by-step guide on how to troubleshoot your router. We have highlighted various things you have to look at before thinking about a replacement, when is the right time to change a router, and how to get the best from your spectrum router.

Your network router could be dropping due to a network overload. In such a case, we recommend upgrading your router or getting another router to compliment the existing one.

Besides, we have articulated reasons why your router might be dropping signals. Keep scrolling to learn more!

What do you do when your spectrum router keeps dropping Wi-Fi

There are several reasons why your spectrum might be dropping signals. Here are three primary reasons;

  • Network overload
  • Defective routers
  • Router and modem distance.

So, what should you do from here? What actions should you take, and what is the overall utility of the action?

Troubleshooting is the systematic evaluation of a device to see where a problem is coming from and look for accurate measures to solve it. When the internet goes down and your spectrum Wi-Fi keeps dropping, leaving you unsure of what to do, always follow these basic steps.

Step#1. Check if the device you are using meets the following criteria:

  • Compatibility with the internet provider that you have.
  • The software update on your device is up to date with the requirements of the internet modem.

It is essential to check if your router is on because using the router while off gives no-signal feedback to your devices.

Tip: to avoid being alarmed for no apparent reason, try restarting your router when there is a connection problem. You can also test it on different devices to see if it works. This check is crucial because you might realize a connection on the other devices, i.e., the problem could be with your laptop or PC.

Step #2. Check cable connections

Device connections cables lose grip from being moved from time to time without you being aware. Check each cable – but better still unplug all the cables and then plug them back well.

Step #3. Check the number of connected devices

Sometimes we are too generous and want to share our internet Wi-Fi with neighbors, or maybe we have too many devices on the internet router. It is good to have a smaller number of devices—fewer devices mean that there’s a high bandwidth available to be shared, while more devices mean that the available bandwidth could potentially drop.

Step #4. Relocation and repositioning of your equipment.

A router should be in a central position. Reposition your router because bad positioning can be the main reason why your spectrum Wi-fi keeps dropping.

Step #5. Protect your network.

It is always good to ensure that you have a  strong password that protects your network. Strong passwords are meant to keep outsiders from getting into your connections and messing with them. They guarantee the safety of your data and promote a risk-free browsing experience.

Step #6. Keep the device dust-free

The dust has always been an enemy to any electronic devices and is not limited to routers only. The dust that accumulates on a router is dangerous because it blocks the vents that allow for free air circulation within the router.

Lousy circulation of air from blocked ducts heats the router and can cause damage. If your spectrum router keeps dropping Wi-Fi, it might be time to dust off your router.

How do I know if my router is working?

Spectrum router has a simple procedure that you can easily use to check your router’s status.

Step #1. Sign in to your spectrum online app and input your password.

Step #2. Toggle through the services. Two things are essential to remember in this step.

  • A green mark means that your connection is working.
  • A red mark indicates the absence of a signal or a low signal strength.

Note. If the above steps are not of great assistance, you can consult the company that manufactures your router using the contact details on their website. There is a support team always ready to attend to your queries.

How do I get the best services from my spectrum router?

  • When not in use, turn off the router – like all electronic devices, continued use can easily mean faster tear and wear. Switching off the device does not only save energy; it protects the device from becoming obsolete fast.
  • Choose a location that gives the optimal signal – a router might not provide the best output if placed near a microwave or in a space surrounded by bricks. Always ensure that your router is placed in a high position for optimum service.
  • Router upgrade – an upgrade on a router always comes with new improved features. A recent upgrade means better services and faster connectivity.
  • Discard the default password – this will ensure that you are secure and information is not subject to theft or hacking. Default passwords are easy to hack into.

When do I replace my spectrum router?

Being in the internet age and working from home and with so many great things of the internet age, it is always good to have a router that tends to your individual needs. There are certain instances when you need to change a router. Check out the following reasons.

Years of use

Experts advise that a router should be changed every five years, but that is restricted to routers that use fewer devices and are not under continuous usage.

Routers that support many devices and are used in higher frequencies should be changed after two years.

Get me there fast

No one likes a slow internet connection – meaning that once a router has become sluggish in response and not taking advantage of the internet speeds you get billed for, you should make a replacement.

Next-gen routers

There is nothing more beautiful than an upgrade. New updates are being made each day as products become more complex and security becomes an issue of interest. You can replace your old router if a next-gen router offers better protection and fast connectivity.

If you want to expand coverage, it’s a good idea to have an extra router in your house or on any premises. A different router means that all areas within your premises are covered.

The default password that comes with the router is usually very easy to guess. Always change it to prevent people from accessing your Wi-Fi connection without your approval.

If your spectrum router keeps dropping Wi-Fi and fails to work as you desire, you can always contact customer care support and ask them about areas to troubleshoot yourself. If your troubleshooting doesn’t work and the problem is hard to fix, it’s best to send the router back to the provider and get a new one if you still have the warranty. You can also call a certified professional to fix your router because you might do more damage to the router by trying to fix it all by yourself.

‘Brain drain’ hits Africa’s tech developers

Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain

Samuel Onidare had a hard time convincing his coworkers that he had made the correct option when he moved back to Nigeria from the United Kingdom a year ago.

As a lecturer in the Department of Telecommunications Science at the University of Ilorin in Nigeria, Onidare is interested in exploring topics related to wireless cellular communication, next-generation mobile broadband, wireless sensor networks, power control, and 5G.

He rejected advice and stayed in Nigeria to assist cultivate local IT potential via teaching and research.

Nonetheless, since his return, government-owned colleges in Nigeria have been shut down due to salary disagreements between faculty and the administration. Overwhelmed, Onidare explained that the situation in Nigeria is emblematic of the difficulty facing countries throughout Sub-Saharan Africa in cultivating technological expertise.

“I believed I had learned a lot so I was going back with all the excitement,” he remarked. “On the other hand, once you’re here, you see that the system isn’t interested in having you. Because of this, many choose to remain overseas or leave the country permanently. A functional system is at the heart of this discussion. It’s not always ideal back home, but it beats what they’ll find in the United States.”

Unrealized potential of Africa’s untapped talent

UN statistics reveal that Africa has the youngest population overall, with 70% of Sub-Saharan Africa’s population being under the age of 30. Because of the great number of young people in the globe, we have access to a vast pool of untapped potential for boosting the economy.

Kunmi Lasisi, a Nigerian digital developer in Canada at the age of 34, thinks that the talent pool is the reason why major international tech companies like Google, Amazon, Starlink, Facebook, and Microsoft have established such a strong presence in Africa. Twitter’s first African headquarters was established in Ghana, West Africa, in April 2021.

Nonetheless, a fresh wave of migration is occurring from various regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, which has major consequences for the technological ecology. The term “japa” refers to the emigration of highly educated people from Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and its largest economy, to nations with higher median incomes.

Canadian immigration officials found that Nigerians had the third-highest number of invitations to apply for permanent status. Similarly, as of 2021, more than 400 Nigerian IT professionals had immigrated to the United Kingdom using the Tech Talent Visa offered by the British government.

Almost everybody in the area is seeing the same thing, according to Belva Digital CEO Fred Kithinzi. Belva Digital is a digital marketing agency based in Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to hiring people from Africa, large IT companies are moving them to their home nations. According to Kithinzi, “in certain quarters, this has been described as a ticking time bomb.” The phrase “brain-drain” is used in certain countries.

Facing economic difficulties

Lasisi, who worked for a digital company in Lagos before migrating to Canada, explains that the lack of secure economic possibilities for young people in Africa is a major factor in the brain drain of computer talent.

Inflationary pressures are on the rise in most African nations, forcing monetary policymakers to increase interest rates in an effort to slow the price of goods and services. Inflation rates in June ranged from 18.6% in Nigeria and 29.8% in Ghana to 191% in Sudan and 220.7% in Zimbabwe.

According to Emmanuel Otori, CEO of Abuja Data School, Nigeria, the lack of necessary infrastructure is a reflection of the status of the economy. This in turn reduces the output of tech professionals.

Otori claims that most people are content to stay in their own country as long as they are able to make a living there, but that inadequate infrastructure and safety concerns force many individuals to leave the continent. In addition, “the cost of data (internet) is an issue for young digital geniuses who do not have resources,” Otori says.

Disparity in pay

When Zimbabwe’s economy was growing by double digits in 2010 after years of hyperinflation, Nigel Mugamu returned there. He reveals that he moved back to the continent to be closer to his family.

Mugamu, who has previously worked in Australia and the United Kingdom, is now the chief storyteller at 263Chat, an online media organization in Zimbabwe. “But since then, I know many Zimbabweans who have left the continent for Germany, France and that’s obviously having a negative impact on tech on the continent,” he said. “Many of these problems may be solved by improving infrastructure, expanding possibilities, increasing access to funding, and cultivating more skilled developers. There is a shortage of venture funds (early stage investors) to back the ideas, a financial gap, and a knowledge gap.”

About 38% of African developers, per Google’s 2021 Africa Developer Ecosystem study, are employed in Africa by a firm with headquarters outside of Africa.

Otori tells SciDev.Net that many of these talented people leave the region as soon as they have acquired sufficient expertise.

Lack of compensation

In Canada, “a tech talent may be able to earn between US$50,000 and US$70,000 a year,” he says. “However, you may earn $250,000 naira every month in Nigeria (about $500 a month or $6,000 a year). Without regard to differences in the cost of living, it is preferable to relocate since the remaining resources will allow you to achieve your desired standard of living.”

He argues that although coding and data analysis are highly sought after, they are also highly specialized fields. “Accordingly, almost 70% of the students who enroll at our school ultimately leave for other countries. This is counterproductive to any potential economic progress in Nigeria. In spite of this, they proceed with the relocation since their motivation is low.”

Onidare uses the example of an associate professor he knew who choose to remain in the United Kingdom and take a lower-paying position as a junior engineer to back up his claim regarding compensation: “If he is working as a junior engineer, he is likely making six times as much as a professor in Nigeria.

A software developer or network administrator in Nigeria might expect to make at least 10 times as much money working abroad as they would at home.

Creating Reliable Structures

Building strong systems between nations in Sub-Saharan Africa is the key to ending the continent’s brain drain issue, according to Onidare, who spoke with SciDev.Net. Appreciating native potential is the first step, he argues.

The problem, he argues, is that Nigerians “don’t respect what’s our own, especially in the digital area.” This may be a problem across Africa.

In addition, Onidare urges cooperation between policymakers in government and academics.

“When I was in Sweden for my master’s degree, the synergy between the academic community and the business world was so strong that corporations often sent prototypes of their newest inventions to universities for evaluation before releasing them to the public,” he explains. “However, here, people tend to doubt that any meaningful progress can be made in our educational systems. But they won’t accept it since the government itself doesn’t value schools.”

However, Kithinzi claims that brain drain is not always a terrible thing because many of Africa’s most successful companies and startups were created by African experts who left the continent to obtain experience elsewhere and then returned to bring change.

“In a capitalist economy, supply and demand cause brain drain. Taking advantage of this situation will serve our interests “In his own words, he says. The leaders of Africa must do everything they can to make the continent a place where talented people from all over, African and others, may thrive and help the continent catch up to the rest of the world economically.”

Apple AirPods Pro 2 Review: Complete Package

For Apple customers, the second-generation Apple AirPods Pro offer the greatest in noise cancellation, usability, convenience, and sound quality.

If the sound quality of your truly wireless earbuds is good, it might be hard to find something better. Apple, on the other hand, has come up with an unusual way to do this, which explains why software updates take so long. You can immediately get the impression that the design hasn’t changed at all. But there are some novel features here, such as a lanyard loop, the ability to use the Apple Watch charger, and speaker grills.

Apple products have a very simple setup process. When you first remove your AirPods Pro from their packaging, your iPhone will begin providing you with instructions. The program also prompts you to snap pictures of your ears during setup so that it can personalize the 3D sound for you.

This feature is commonplace in modern headphones, particularly Sony models. The app will also let you know if the silicone tips are a good fit for your ears and if a different or better seal is required. Everything here prepares you for what’s to come.

The ability to block out noise was one of the best things about the original Apple AirPods Pro. And with what’s included in this release, Apple has truly surpassed its own standards. When it comes to more than just blocking out background noise, the noise cancellation is excellent.

The new AirPods Pro are so effective at blocking out ambient noise that they seem like two little Pods of Peace and Quiet. They only dull the loudest sounds while leaving the rest intact. It does this without making the dead air spaces that were common in early attempts to block out noise.

As you travel around the United States, you’ll see how popular the Apple AirPods Pro are. The effect is the same as if everyone is donning a pair. Here’s where the new adaptive transparency function of AirPods Pro really shines as a technological breakthrough. When set to transparent mode, the AirPods automatically muffle strong ambient sounds.

The most noticeable change to the hardware of the Apple AirPods Pro is that they now have physical controls for the volume. When the music is playing, you may adjust the level by sliding your finger up or down the stem’s capacitive “force sensor” part. It may be done with either earbud, and the volume change is audible as a little click in that ear.

Weirdly, the loudness of the feedback click never changes, thus you can’t tell where you now stand in terms of the game’s difficulty. The only sounds you get are a unique beep at maximum level and a bloop at minimum. I really like the additional volume control and wish Apple would have included it with the first generation of Apple AirPods Pro.

For extra safety, the AirPods Pro case has the same U1 chip that is in an AirTag. This makes it possible to track the exact location of the case. As before, when your missing bag is close by, the Find My app will show you a screen similar to the one you saw when you first installed it.

Furthermore, Apple has included a speaker at the bottom of the cover. When charging, when the battery is low, and every time you reseat the AirPods and close the lid, the speaker emits a little chime.

If you misplace your Apple AirPods Pro outside of the house, you may use the “Find My” network to be alerted when other Apple devices come into contact with them . Connecting your Apple AirPods Pro to your Apple ID is a brilliant anti-theft safeguard that no stranger can erase, and it’s great to see Apple working to make it even easier to track them down. Moreover, I’ve found that the earphones’ and the case’s battery percentages stay visible in the iPhone’s battery widget for a lot longer than they used to.

The Apple AirPods Pro and their charging case have an IPX4 rating for resistance to water and perspiration, and the case can be recharged using the same Apple Watch charger that is compatible with MagSafe and standard Qi chargers. Apple says the new record is six hours of listening time with ANC turned on, 5.5 hours with head-tracking spatial audio, and 4.5 hours of continuous talking time. The total amount of time you can listen to music is expected to be 30 hours, and recharging the case will add an extra six hours over the first-generation Pros.

The quality of incoming voice calls appears to have been slightly enhanced over the first-generation Apple AirPods Pro. Apple hasn’t made any promises about this, but my coworker Becca Farsace and I have both seen improvements in the second-generation device.

Machine learning models identify apps that will likely violate Google Play store guidelines

Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain

Apps submitted to the Google Play store must meet certain guidelines and criteria.
Apps are posted to the store as soon as they are submitted, but it might take Google while to review them and take down those that break the rules.
App makers that have had several releases deleted from the store may be blacklisted.
Many new apps in the Google Play store are quickly withdrawn for infractions of the shop’s policies.
For the users of these apps, the potential for data loss within the app is an inconvenience.
The University of Groningen’s Department of Computer Science has developed two machine learning models that can foretell whether or not newly uploaded app will be withdrawn.
Both programmers and end users can benefit from these models.
Information about this study may be found in publication that appeared in the September issue of Systems and Soft Computing.
Assistant Professor Fadi Mohsen of the University of Groningen’s Information Systems Group at the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science, and Artificial Intelligence states, “My research focus rests on digital privacy and security challenges.”
He set out to make a system that would let him predict whether or not new apps would be pulled, since this could be bad for both the people who made the apps and the people who used them.
According to Mohsen, “there have already been attempts to accomplish this,” but they tend to “focus on certain sorts of programs that were banned for specific reasons, for example, because they included malware.” We wanted to make a model that could predict how likely it was that an app would be removed across all app categories and reasons for removal. The past initiatives only cared about consumers, but Mohsen also wants to help engineers who unintentionally broke the rules.
Machine learning models identify apps that will likely violate Google Play store guidelines
A high-level overview of the data collection workflow. Credit: Systems and Soft Computing (2022). DOI: 10.1016/j.sasc.2022.200045

The first step was to gather a huge amount of data on both deleted and still-installed apps: We gathered information about almost two million apps, such as the descriptions their creators submitted to the App Store. Then we went ahead and built the foundation for half of these apps.

Tested models on a large data set of apps

After that, Mohsen and his team monitored the App Store to see which applications were withdrawn over the course of six months. This was true of 56% of the people we chose. It took 26 months to put together the data set that was used to train the ML models.

Their choice of algorithm was known as Extreme Gradient Boosting. For challenges like this, “it is the best machine learning algorithm,” Mohsen says. Two different prediction models, one for programmers and one for end users, were built using the method.

The user model was made with 47 characteristics, and a test dataset showed that it was accurate 79.2% of the time in predicting app uninstallations. The developer model relied on just 37 features, resulting in a somewhat lower accuracy of 76.2 percent, because some of these variables, such as app store ratings, are unavailable before submitting the program to the store.

The future of an app may be predicted with “reasonable precision,” as Mohsen puts it. The next step is to give app developers and users a way to figure out if their apps are likely to be deleted. “This is useful for developers because they risk being removed from the Google Play Store for repeated rule violations,” says Mohsen, “but it’s also useful for consumers since they create data with their applications that they’ll lose if the app is abruptly pulled.”

It’s not only you who may learn from this study; researchers everywhere will reap the rewards. “The large collection of data we put together for our work is now available on the Dutch website Dataverse.nl,” says Mohsen. This means that anybody can strive to improve upon Mohsen’s and his team’s results. We can’t wait to see if they can compete with us in this next tournament. The advantages to consumers and creators would grow even larger as a result.

Tesla to deliver 1st electric semis to PepsiCo in December

Tesla Chairman and CEO Elon Musk unveiled the “Semi” electric Truck in November 2017 in Hawthorne near Los Angeles.

PepsiCo said Friday it will receive its first Tesla semi-trucks on December 1, a vehicle Elon Musk has said can travel five hundred miles on a single charge.

The trucks will support the soda company’s Sacramento, California beverage plant as well as its Modesto, California factory for the Frito-Lay snack brand, according to Pepsi.

A Pepsi spokeswoman declined to say how many Tesla trucks will be delivered, saying in an email that “we will provide more details once we have taken delivery.”

Musk announced the planned December 1 delivery in a Twitter post on Thursday night, calling the truck “super fun to drive.”

He first announced the vehicle in 2017, targeting production two years later. But the timeframe has been pushed back several times amid supply chain p

Chipmaker TSMC, Gross Sales – Buck Estimates

Chipmaker TSMC makes chips that are utilized in a variety of products including laptops, information applications, wired and wireless communication systems as well as consumer electronics such as game consoles.

TSMC’s factory in Nanjing, China.

On Friday, chipmaker TSMC, the largest chipmaker in Taiwan, announced higher earnings than previous buck estimates. This comes as a surprise despite a warning from competitors that the global economic crisis was hurting demand for electronics.

The world’s largest silicon wafer fabs are operated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which also makes some of the most advanced microchips used in everything from cell phones and rockets to automobiles and cars.

The revenue generated for September was down 4.5% from August but up 365 from September last year. Bloomberg News buck estimates indicate that chipmaker TSMC revenue rose 48% year-on-year to about $19.4 billion.

According to chipmaker TSMC, there is continued growth in markets for high-performance computing and automotive chips. In July, the chipmaker reported sales were up more than 40% in the second quarter.

Other chip companies who have indicated positive buck estimates include Samsung which has announced that it is working at its full capacity to address the global shortage.

Is there a chip surplus on the horizon – Chipmaker TSMC

The TSMC news release coincided with a warning from Samsung, whose profits, according to buck estimates, might fall by 32% in the third quarter. Companies such as AMD have announced a lack of chip surplus and sales below $ 1 billion below expectations.

Chipmaker TSMC is better protected from a downturn in part because TSMC inventory contains some of the most advanced and compact chips that are still in high demand and have limited availability.

TSMC revenue, according to Apple and Qualcomm, is driven by the Taiwanese company’s influence on chip production worldwide.

But according to AMD, sales of the embedded, data center, and gaming chips increased dramatically year over year and met expectations. In Q3, total sales increased by 29%. On November 1st, official results will be released.

Today’s stock market had a difficult day overall for equities, with Taiwan Semiconductor shares down 6.2% to 69.75. The price of AMD shares fell 13.9% to settle at 58.44.

The SOX, or Philadelphia semiconductor index, fell 6.1% on Friday. The 30 most heavily traded semiconductor stocks in the US are included in the SOX. The SOX has dropped 40.3% so far this year. The most severely impacted manufacturers recently are those of memory chips and PC processors due to the fall in sales in those markets.

Algorithms predict sports teams’ moves with 80% accuracy

Algorithms power Cornell University’s new algorithms might ensure that autonomous cars make better judgments and improve human-robot interaction.

Credit: Cornell University

Artificial intelligence in today’s culture is used in a variety of ways because of its ability to effectively address difficult issues from healthcare, banking, and education. AI is enhancing the convenience and speed of our daily lives.

More than 80% of volleyball player behavior in-game can be predicted by algorithms developed at Cornell’s Laboratory for Intelligent Systems and Controls, and the lab is currently working with the hockey team Big Red to expand the research project’s applicability.

The algorithms are distinctive in that they take an integrated approach to anticipating actions, mixing explicit information such as an athlete’s position on the team with implicit data such as an athlete’s position on the court.

Silvia Ferrari, John Brancaccio Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the study’s principal investigator, found that computer vision can understand visual information such as jersey color and a player’s position or posture.

We continue to use this real-time data while incorporating hidden characteristics like team strategy and player accountability that people can deduce as we are experts in this environment.

Ferrari and graduate students Junyi Dong and Qingze Huo taught computers to infer hidden factors by watching games, much like humans learn about sports. The algorithms used machine learning to extract information from records of volleyball games and use it to make predictions when new games are presented to them.

The results, published September 22 in the journal ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, show that the algorithms can execute multiple actions over a sequence of up to forty-four frames with an average accuracy of more than 80%.

To predict and infer players’ roles with an average accuracy of almost 85%, such as B. the distinction between a defender and a blocker. Movements included spiking, sitting, blocking, digging, jogging, crouching, falling, standing, and jumping.

Algorithms Video and Data Analysis

More than 80% of volleyball player behavior in-game can be predicted by algorithms developed at Cornell’s Laboratory for Intelligent Systems and Controls, and the lab is currently working with Big Red’s ice hockey team to expand the research project’s applicability.

Ferrari hopes teams will use the algorithms to rehearse specific moves and game scenarios before competitions, teaching them through videos of an opponent’s previous games and exploiting their predictive power.

Men’s hockey team Big Red and Ferrari are currently working together to further improve the program after Ferrari filed a patent application. Ferrari and her graduate students, led by Frank Kim, are developing algorithms that can autonomously recognize players, actions, and games using game videos provided by the team.

Support for commenting on feature films is one of the project goals. Manual annotations by team members are a time-consuming process. Ben Russell, director of Cornell’s men’s ice hockey team, said, “Our program has a strong focus on video analytics and data technology. As a coaching staff, we are always looking for ways to improve to better serve our athletes.

I am extremely impressed by the study that Professor Ferrari and her students have carried out so far. This idea has the potential to have a significant impact on how teams research and prepare for competition.

“Because if you consider all the content, all the contextual clues, and you observe a group of people, you can do a lot better at predicting what they’re going to do,” said Ferrari, who is also the associate dean for cross-campus engineering research. “Humans are not as unpredictable as the machine learning algorithms are making them out to be right now,” Ferrari said.

New Report Seeks to Ensure Hydropower Sustainability

Hydropower sustainability means reduced emissions of harmful waste products or air pollution. Utilizing hydropower helps the United States avoid over 200 million metric tons of carbon emissions per year, the equivalent of nearly 38 million passenger automobiles.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy has given hydropower operators new information to better plan for extreme weather events and changes in seasonal energy demands brought on by climate change.

For the current analysis, ORNL researchers simulated future hydrologic conditions at 132 federal hydropower plants in the United States using downscaled global climate forecasts. The generated forecasts will allow hydropower operators and policymakers to adjust their operational schedules and water consumption each season as part of a comprehensive mitigation strategy in order to prepare for changing climatic conditions and decreased water availability.

Hydropower Sustainability and the Environment

According to Shih-Chieh Kao, water power program manager at ORNL, “one of the most important concerns impacting the resilience of U.S. hydropower systems and infrastructure is the amplification of future severe events, including both floods and droughts.” In order to adjust to a changing environment, “this new normal compels us to think differently about present operating procedures.”

For hydropower operators, catastrophic occurrences are only one problem; another is a rising tension between water supply and electricity demand. In the western United States, an earlier-than-expected snowmelt season is anticipated to have an effect on water runoff. This might lead to less water being available for hydropower production in the summertime, precisely when electricity demand rises. A pressure on water resources for industrial and agricultural usage, navigation, municipal water supply, flood control, and other uses is also being caused by increased evaporation as a result of warming temperatures.

More Plans Towards Hydropower Sustainability

Future energy planning will benefit from a better understanding of these shifts. 35% of renewable energy and over 7% of all the electricity generated in the United States come from hydropower.

Building on two prior rounds of hydroclimate evaluations completed over the preceding ten years, ORNL collaborated with DOE’s Water Power Technologies Office and other government agencies. The study was limited to federal hydropower plants, which account for nearly half of the nation’s hydropower capacity and offer a range of non-power services to the local population. The energy generated by these plants is largely sold to public power utilities and rural electric cooperatives in 33 U.S. states and is marketed by DOE Power Marketing Administrations.

Insights built on data

The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, which supports recurring research by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, provided the study’s foundation with often updated global climate estimates. However, researchers had to take into account features particular to each facility and region in order to downscale climate signals for each watershed in the best possible way.

Data on observed and simulated climatic events, historical hydropower plant generation, and specific watershed and land surface properties for each region were gathered by ORNL researchers between 2010 and 2013. The research team used this information to create an assessment framework that could simulate a range of hydrologic conditions, such as annual and seasonal air temperatures, precipitation, runoff from melting snow or rain, and levels of drought, in order to project water availability for hydropower operation.

Sustainability Approaches for Hydropower Sustainability

The team concentrated from 2014 to 2017 on how seasonal and monthly variations in climate can affect the production of hydropower. This improvement made it possible for hydropower operators to assess existing operating procedures with a focus on climate adaptation by providing crucial data and forecasts.

The team concentrated from 2014 to 2017 on how seasonal and monthly variations in climate can affect the production of hydropower. This improvement made it possible for hydropower operators to assess existing operational procedures with a focus on climate by providing crucial data and forecasts.

A multimodal evaluation approach was created by ORNL in the most current cycle, which ran from 2018 to 2022, to better highlight uncertainty and variability in future hydropower predictions across areas. Together with ORNL, Texas A&M University and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory worked on this project’s phase.

The indications of global climate change were downscaled into future hydrologic and hydropower estimates at each watershed site using a variety of numerical models and statistical techniques. Future streamflow, hydropower activities, and reservoir evaporation models were all included in each evaluation. These models were used by academics to forecast how future energy consumption will change as a result of climate change.

Balancing water availability with water management

Flexibility will be essential to maintaining the advantages of hydropower as a renewable energy source, and these models offer a state-by-state road map for long-term planning.

DOE is expanding its research to non-federal hydropower plants, whose operators may not have the resources to examine and solve these concerns, in order to provide more hydropower stakeholders the tools and information they need to plan for climate change consequences.

The climate system is intricate, but we can now use ever-more-accurate prediction models to comprehend anticipated shifts in climate extremes and figure out what can be done to prevent these changes, according to Kao.

There are emojis everywhere. On the internet, these little pictograms may be seen all around. Adobe has released the findings of a new report, “Adobe’s Future of Creativity: 2022 U.S. Emoji Trend Report,” after studying the usage patterns of 10,000 emoji users worldwide, including 5,000 users in the US.

The details and justifications examined Emojis are used in communications by people because they “provide people the tools they desire to be able to categorize themselves and communicate their sentiments, whether it’s on social media or messaging applications.”

They enable people to connect more closely with others and transmit more than just words, according to Kamile Demir. Kamile Demir is an Adobe computer scientist and a consultant to the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee.

1 – Emojis makes you seem awesome

According to the study, 73% of US users asked believe that using emojis in communications makes them look cooler, nicer, and even funny.

2 – Can convey a contact of lightness to a dialog

It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Emojis undoubtedly make it easier to express a feeling quickly without using words. Emoji usage may therefore encourage improved communication. For 91% of US consumers, the right emoji adds a touch of humor to conversations that are typically contentious.

According to 60% of US respondents, using these little emojis can also improve consumers’ psychological well-being. Additionally, almost all US emoji users (88%) claim that when someone uses an emoji, they are more likely to feel empathy towards them.

3 – For seduction

Emojis are proven to be quite effective in forging an emotional connection in the era of courting websites (or “Date Me” Google Docs). Using emoji is a sign of emotional intelligence, according to Paul D. Hunt, typeface designer and font developer at Adobe. It indicates that you may be weak and wear your heart on your sleeve.

But be careful to use the proper emojis when it comes to seduction. According to the survey, the best emojis for flirting and wooing are “kisses,” “smiley face with hearts,” and “coronary heart eyes.”

However, it’s better to avoid using the “eggplant,” “indignant face,” and “poop” emojis, as is obviously the case. According to the study, 32% of Era Z users had previously broken up with their partner using an emoji.

4 – Emojis can enhance co-worker relations

Workplace connections have changed in the opposite direction with the development of remote working. According to the study, emojis have the ability to bring coworkers together despite distance.

Emojis, according to 69% of US respondents, have a positive impact on likeability and may even help people communicate ideas more quickly (79%), hasten group decision-making (62%) and increase creativity (58%).

“One of the difficulties with hybrid work is that, without face-to-face interaction. It may be harder to understand textual communication from our coworkers. A quick cheerful face at the start of your message may go a long way, according to Kamile Demir. Kamile believes that emoji are an excellent approach to reduce the likelihood of miscommunication.

5 – To advertise inclusivity

In this era of emojis, where there is a push for greater diversity, justice, and variety in order to better accept clients from all over the world, the issue of depiction might be crucial. Their use encourages upbeat talks about cultural and socioeconomic issues, according to 71% of US respondents.

However, there is still a long way to go because 83% of US customers feel that emojis “should still give further illustration.”
